“The King Day of Service brings together people who might not ordinarily
meet, breaks down barriers that have divided us in the past, leads to
better understanding and ongoing relationships, and is an opportunity to
recruit new volunteers for your ongoing work.

Participation in the King Day of Service has grown steadily over the
past decade, with hundreds of thousands of Americans each year engaging
in projects such as tutoring and mentoring children, painting schools
and senior centers, delivering meals, building homes, and reflecting on
Dr. King's life and teachings. Many of the projects started on King Day
continue to engage volunteers beyond the holiday and impact the
community year-round.”

Trained Volunteer Position, RAINN (Nationwide)

RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation's largest
anti-sexual assault organization and operates the National Sexual
Assault Hotline. RAINN carries out programs to prevent sexual assault,
help victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice. The
National Sexual Assault Online Hotline, also operated by RAINN, provides
live, secure, anonymous, instant message-style crisis support to the
growing number of people who prefer communicating via the Internet —
giving those affected by sexual assault a safe place to turn when they

1.) Health Advocacy Fellow, Medicare Rights Center (NYC)
Medicare Rights Center (MRC) is a national, nonprofit organization that
helps older people and people with disabilities get good affordable
health care through direct service, education and advocacy initiatives.
MRC is the largest independent source of Medicare information in the
United States.

MRC seeks recent college graduates for one-year or two-year Health
Advocacy Fellowships to work in our Manhattan offices, beginning in June
or July of 2007. The Fellows work closely with experienced senior staff.

The Fellows' responsibilities include

providing information, assistance and referrals to people with Medicare,
their caregivers and professionals; intervening on behalf of clients to
help resolve denials of care, delays in care, lack of access to
specialty care, and/or the delivery of inadequate care;
Developing cases and representing clients at administrative hearings;
helping develop information and referral resources for clients, and
guiding them to those resources; researching and writing about
Medicare-related topics; speaking at community meetings; collaborating
with community organizations, advocacy organizations, and government

Fellows will also work on other projects within the organization as
necessary (versatility is a must!). The Fellowships are ideal for
individuals with career interests in law, medicine, social work, or
public and healthcare policy. Spanish speaking preferred. The stipend is

2.) Various Web, Graphics and Editorial Positions, Conservation Value
(San Francisco)
Conservation Value currently seeks several interns and volunteers to
join our team as we work to (1) complete the development and launch of a
new and unique online sustainability information clearinghouse and (2)
partner with the San Francisco Green Apple Music and Arts Festival to
develop their sustainability initiatives.

The ideal candidates for the below positions will be passionate about
sustainability, reliable and hard working, and will have a strong
interest in helping to achieve Conservation Value's mission.

Intern and volunteer positions are unpaid, but we are happy to work with
top candidates to secure donations, grants and fellowships to support

– Business & Finance – Assist with business and strategic planning,

*Freelance Writer: The Museum is seeking a volunteer to write marketing

and website content.  Volunteer will gain experience writing for an
international audience, as well as experience tailoring their writing to
suit different age groups.

Necessary skills: Critical thinking skills needed to distill writing
down for varied audiences; seasoned in writing, preferably with

5.) Various Museum Operations and Fundraising Positions, The Montshire
Museum of Science (Norwich, Vermont)
The Montshire Museum of Science is a hands-on museum located in Norwich,
Vermont, offering dozens of exciting exhibits relating to the natural
and physical sciences, ecology, and technology. The building is located
on a 110-acre site near the Connecticut River, and the Museums' outdoor
environment is a large part of the visitor experience. Science Park is a
two-acre exhibit area in a beautiful, park-like setting. Also outside is
a network of easy-to-moderate walking trails for visitors of all ages
and fitness levels. The Montshire Museum is an official visitor center
for the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge.

*Office volunteers work with Museum staff behind-the-scenes on a variety
of tasks, depending on their skills and interests. Possibilities
include: answering the phone, mailings, and public relations projects.
Time commitment: varies.

*Auction volunteers handle a wide variety of jobs for this important
annual (May) event, including asking for donations from businesses and
individuals, decorations and set-up, and helping on Auction night. Time
commitment: up to 4-6 hours/week during January to May.

*Magic Carpet volunteers organize a popular series of monthly luncheons
(October-March) that feature guest speakers and regional menus.
Volunteers line up the speakers, select appropriate menus, prepare the
food at home, set-up and serve at the Museum, and coordinate
reservations. Time commitment: 6-10 hours/luncheon.

6.) Various Volunteer Positions, FINCA (Washington, D.C.)
Loans—at market rates of interest—are the central service provided by
the village banking method. FINCA
(http://www.villagebanking.org/vbank.htm) offers loans, not grants, to
low-income microentrepreneurs, because at the root of their poverty is
lack of opportunity, not lack of desire to work. While many poor
families have ideas for fostering their own employment by creating small
businesses, few can access the capital they need to begin. They are
excluded from conventional financial sources (e.g., commercial banks)
because they lack credit ratings and assets to pledge as collateral.
Even a small loan can stimulate productivity, enabling the
microentrepreneur to build assets and purchase inventory at the best
prices. By investing the loan and increasing his or her business as a
result, the borrower reaps an additional reward—increased self-esteem
through self-help.

Volunteers contribute significantly to FINCA's work. Our volunteers help
with a variety of projects and assignments both at our headquarters in
the United States and at our affiliate offices in developing countries

7.) Marketing, Event and Writing Positions, Red Cross (Greater Chicago)
The following are available at the American Red Cross of Greater
– Marketing Coordinator: The Marketing Coordinator will work closely
with the Marketing Outreach Manager to execute and coordinate different
off-line and on-line marketing plans and content development.  This
person will also establish on-going partner relationships with outside
vendors who would be willing to assist the American Red Cross of Greater
Chicago in executing the chapter's marketing needs on an on-going basis.
2 days a week, 3-4 hours per day.

-Health Fair and Event Coordinator/ Office Support: Develop and execute
plans for any Red Cross event from health fairs to chapter events.
Assist in scheduling speaking engagements for speaker's bureau or senior
leadership board. Act as point-person for Event Go-Kit requests and
ensure all kits are up-to-date with general materials as well as
department-requested materials. Work on website updates as needed,
including changes in copy and images. Assist in implementation of Phase
2 of new website. Provide support for various marketing and public
relations activities that involve logistics support, research, and
archiving.  Check web email on a regular basis, especially during local
disaster operations. Forward email inquiries that are received to the

Using schedule information provided by other volunteers, arrange for
placement of ads in local publications for adoption shows and similar
events. Also maintain contact with other organizations' advertising
staff to share event information. Draft public service announcements
either from models provided or as original material for use in TV and
radio spots.

Skills: Some writing ability is a plus; ability to follow schedules and
good telephone skills are needed. Work often involves planning to be
sure copy meets varying standards for publication and working to
deadline, but some ads can be placed via the WWW. Willingness to make
and maintain contact with local reporters on behalf of the organization
is highly desirable. Applicant must be a cat-fancier with an
appreciation of feral cats, and an interest in holistic cat care or
willingness to learn.

9.) Graphic / Web Design, The Revolving Museum (Lowell, Mass.)
The Revolving Museum is a community arts organization located in Lowell
whose mission is to serve Lowell's underserved young people through an
array of experiential education and public art programs. It was founded
in twelve abandoned railroad cars in 1984 by Jerry Beck, an artist with
an extensive history creating public artworks with community and youth.
Originally an artists' collaborative located in Boston, the RM moved to
Lowell in 2002 and obtained its own building at that time as well. Since
its arrival in Lowell the RM has forged an array of successful
partnerships and collaborative relationships with local banks and
businesses, City of Lowell agencies, social service organizations and a
diversity of grassroots and other groups.

The Revolving Museum has several projects where a graphic design
volunteer would be very helpful. On-going projects include creating
marketing tools such as PowerPoint presentations to support programs and
initiatives, brochures and other promotional print pieces. The Museum is
also looking to redesign its website and electronic monthly newsletter,
and a volunteer with these skills could work on either of these
projects. Other graphic design needs include providing graphic elements
for the monthly e-newsletter, stationary templates, business cards,
thank you cards, invitations and signage. Volunteers can be involved
with print production including selecting print vendors, preparing print
files, and conducting press checks. The Museum also has 20-years worth
of artwork documentation in the form of slides and digital images that
need organizing. This would entail scanning 35mm slides and adding to a
digital image library. The volunteer would work directly with the key
staff of the museum – the artistic director, administrative director and
gallery manager. All volunteer design will be credited in print and on
electronic media. This is a great way to build your portfolio!
Volunteers should have some formal training in graphic design, knowledge
of Dream Weaver software and Photoshop Design Suite software. Note that
we are a PC based organization.

Coastal Pet Rescue is in need of pet foster parents; a volunteer
coordinator, a CPA; volunteers for fund-raising events; a public

Common Impact connects Marketing and Graphic Design professionals with

12.) Outreach Marketing Volunteer, North County Lifeline (Vista, Calif.)
North County Lifeline is a non-profit, human service agency serving the
communities of north San Diego county. We are looking for a volunteer to
help with outreach for our Free Tax Preparation Program for low income
families and individuals in Vista and Oceanside. Duties: Inform the
communities of the free income tax preparation service. Distribute
flyers in local Vista and Oceanside stores, markets, churches,
affordable housing complexes, etc. Help us reach out to those in need!

headquarters in Federal Way, Washington, as well as with offices around

14.) PR Volunteer, Circle Tail, (Virtual Opportunity based in Pleasant
Plain, Ohio)
Circle Tail, Inc. was established in 1997 to provide high quality
assistance dogs to people with mobility, hearing, neurologic or
psychiatric disabilities and promote the human-canine bond in the
community by providing dog adoptions, obedience training, behavior
management and boarding services.

Circle Tail, Inc. receives our dogs through donations; we do not have
our own breeding program. Careful selection of puppies and young adults
from unwanted litters, shelters, and rescues, not only helps people with
disabilities, but also provides purpose to an unwanted dog's life.

Description: Circle Tail, Inc. is a small organization that provides
valuable services to the community. The more people who know about us,
the more people and animals we help! We are seeking a volunteer who can
take charge of PR for Circle Tail. Responsibilities include submitting
and following up on press releases and other media activities, and
actively promoting Circle Tail in the community. This is a good
opportunity that can be done at home for those who wish they could help,
