“If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India!”

– Romaine Rolland

I am back home from my journey, glad to have gone but glad to be home. I am also very grateful to Shonali Burke, ABC, who was so kind and generous to edit and post the JOTW newsletter in my absence. She is one of the few people who can truly appreciate what a big job it is day in and day out to put this big newspaper on your doorstep every Monday morning.

Welcome to the award-winning free Job of the Week e-mail networking

newsletter for professional communicators, dedicated to the positive

unanticipated consequences of networking. You are among 11,51 subscribers in this community of communicators.

This is newsletter number 783.

Since the JOTW newsletter was started, there have been 24,957 jobs posted to the JOTW network for sharing among the members.

I’ll be in Key West tonight. And in Mayport, Fla. tomorrow night.

To subscribe for free, send a blank e-mail to JOTW-subscribe@topica.com.

To unsubscribe, read the instructions at the end of the newsletter. If you are a JOTW subscriber and changing jobs, be sure to change your address for JOTW. I can't do it for you.

If you can read this newsletter, then you are on the JOTW list. If you did not receive your JOTW newsletter by email in your in box this morning, it is because you have a junk mail folder, spam filter, or capacity issues on your end.

*** One Paragraph Pitch:

Hi Ned,

Just learned of your great service today. Here's my pitch (and I'm one of those who did read your FAQ).

I'm in the business of telling great stories and constantly striving to push the envelope. I carry a digital tape recorder with me and write while I run. I bring poise, polish, clear thought and calm nerves to complex challenges. My career has enjoyed a diverse trajectory, but it has always entailed treating every challenge as an opportunity. In 1995, I successfully brokered the profitable sale of a pioneering Internet communications company I founded and ran to a major publisher. Subsequently, I was tapped to create and launch another successful publication for Institutional Investor. My trend spotting and analytical abilities have been recognized as an author, nationally syndicated columnist and former journalist, as well as an international speaker on Internet business issues, from Cyprus to Japan. Most recently, I have led rebranding and repositioning efforts as the Director of Marketing for a national non-profit focused on early childhood development, as well as founding and serving as Executive Director of my own non-profit, concerned with early parental intervention for children with autism.

*** From Larry Light, who runs the successful coaching practice, eJobCoach Unlimited.

If you’ve reached an impasse in your job search, I offer a different “take” on why most resumes aren’t really effective.

‘“Killer” Resumes That Get Jobs’ is a 26-page guide that presents actual resumes from people I coached that resulted in decent-paying jobs ($75K – $150K). I have also collected proven materials to create my guide ‘Cover Letters That Got Interviews’. And last, because some people I've worked with have told me before coaching that they’d been selected for interviews but ultimately weren’t chosen for the job, I've written a guide called ‘How To Interview To Get The Job’.

To preview this, go to an article published in the Orange County Register at http://economy.freedomblogging.com/2009/03/31/another-dirty-little-secret-of-job-interviews/

for an idea of my coaching style over the last twelve years.

On my website I have these Guides, separately, at $18.50 each. For your readers, Ned, I’d be glad to offer all three bundled together for $32.50. For those who need something more, I can offer the three Guides supported by three hours’ of coaching, which could focus on:

 Turning your existing resume into a “Killer” Resume;

 Interview prep and follow-up;

 Guiding you into networking to find the “hidden jobs”;

 Handling problem spots (e.g., returning to work after a gap);

 Whatever is critical for you.

All for a one-time fee of $150.

Anyone with special needs, call me at (949) 716-3581 or e-mail me larry.light@cox.net and I’ll call you back to see if coaching would be useful. No obligation. For JOTW readers, I’ll offer a substantial discount from my usual fee; I’d be glad to discuss this during the call.

A phone call or e-mail will also get you any of the materials above.

*** Ned’s trip to India:

I hope to post a full account of my trip to the UAE and India at “Your Very Next Step,” my travel and adventure blog (www.yourverynextstep.com). But here’s a little tid bit:

Elephanta Island (or Gharapuri Island, “The place of caves”) isjust one of the islands in Mumbai Harbour, between Mumba on the west and the Indian mainland on the east. I took the ferry boat out there to see the world famous cave temples, the Elephanta Caves, carved out of solid rock inside the islands caves.

My friends, Elizabeth, and I took the boat from the Gateway of India, next to the Taj Mahal Hotel, known today for the 26/11 attacks. It was a pleasant ride, albiet on a crowded ferry. They charged us a few ectra rupees to sit on the upper deck. We perched next to the pilot house. The boat passes ships in the harbor, the Indian Navy's dockyards, where I could see Leanders and Russian destroyers that now serve in the Indian Navy, as well as a petroleum loading facility on one of the islands. It's not the most crowded roadstead I've see, but among the the top ten. We sat with the wind coming towards us. The young girl behind us who got sick managed to spray the rest of the people on the upper deck (and maybe the lower deck, too), but not us.

Once you get off the boat you pay a fee, which is more for foreigners (about ten times more). Then you take a little narrow gauge train down the pier and around towards the little village, and that costs some more money. They you can walk up the 150 steps or so, past the monkeys and the stalls selling shirts, trinkets, even magic tricks, to the top where they charge you again to get into the cave area.

We had taken a late afternoon boat to the island, and were in a hurry so we wouldn't miss the last boat back. But even a short visit to see the first and largest of the caves was worth the trip. These caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contain Shaivistic high reliefs in stone of Hindu deities important to worshipers of Shiva. The sculptures date to the Silhara kings of the 9th through 13th centuries (810–1260). The temple complex is said to be the abode of Shiva. Imagine that, I was in the abode of Shiva!

The caves had been somewhat destroyed by time and man. Yet they still had a dignity and power about them. One altar in a dark place, upon closer investigation, had a recent offering on it. This is still a sacred place.

This site has some great photos of Elephanta Island and the caves.

*** From Bill Seiberlich:

I was sent this thoughtful advice from a recruiter:

Ask the Recruiter – Can what I post on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites really affect an interview process?

We live in the instant information age. It is everywhere you look. To think this does not affect the interview process is acting like the proverbial ostrich with its head in the sand, hoping no one sees it. Make sure you think about the pros and cons of these constant information updaters and how you can minimize negative impacts on your ability to land a new job. Here are a few things to keep in mind

Here are a few things to keep in mind.

Just because you only allow a few friends to see your information does not mean it will not travel. The minute you hit update on your Facebook page, you are putting that information into cyberspace. Think about what that status update says about you and who you are. Could it turn off people who do not know you as well?

Companies are starting to check Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn as a normal part of their interview process. Make sure, just as you need to have appropriate voicemail messages and email addresses, you are careful about the types of web pages you are maintaining, including the profile pictures and the content on the page. A recent publication indicated that 25 percent of internet users had a picture or video they wished were not on the internet. Try not to let this be you.

As a cardinal rule, you never bash past, present or potential employers in public, and especially online. Recently, a candidate left an interview and posted on Twitter that he had received an offer but was not sure he wanted to take it for the great money because he knew it would be an awful commute and a horrible place to work. Needless to say, this made its way back to the employer who rescinded the offer.

Use common sense about the internet. IF you are at all hesitant about posting or responding to someone's posting, use your better judgment. An instant click may have a lasting impact on your professional career.

(Good advice, Bill. I can't believe some of the stuff I see on some Facebook pages. That doesn't stop me from looking, but…)

*** Judy Heise in Annapolis suggested sharing this with the JOTW network:

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.

Neither be cynical about love;

for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,

gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.

And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

“India was the mother of our race and Sanskrit the mother of Europe's languages. She was the mother of our philosophy, mother through the Arabs, of much of our mathematics, mother through Buddha, of the ideals embodied in Christianity, mother through village communities of self-government and democracy. Mother India is in many ways the mother of us all.”
