This is JOTW newsletter number 936

“Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man.”

– Benjamin Franklin

***  Welcome to the JOTW network.

***  This week’s newsletter is sent to you from the JOTW Remote Global Operations Center in La Spezia, Italy.

***  Top Jobs:  Stand above the rest.  Your job can be right here, at the top of the weekly JOTW newsletter.  Top job placement costs $100 per job per week.  To be on top, contact Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.

***  This week’s top job:

***  If you find out about a job opportunity in communications, send it to me (lundquist989@cs.com), and I’ll share it with the JOTW network.  Your friends can sign up by sending a blank e-mail to

JOTW-subscribe@topica.com.

You are among 11,582 subscribers in this community of communicators.  While this level has been pretty flat over the past year or so, this does represent an all-time high for the JOTW network.
***  The JOTW network is built upon cooperative principles.  Share, and reap the benefits.  And it feels good to help others.  I call it selfish altruism.  But this also means you need to contribute.

***  I can’t change your e-mail address for you.  But you can.  Send a blank e-mail from your old account to JOTW-unsubscribe@topica.com.  Then send a blank e-mail from your new account to JOTW-subscribe@topica.com.

***  The general JOTW policy is to submit three listings per corporate recruiter or executive search firm submission.  If you have more than three listings, I suggest sending out a Can’t Wait posting.

***  From Ed Whitman:

For those of you living in the Washington, DC area, you may be interested in attending the next concert by the American Balalaika Symphony, in which I play the domra bass and write each concert’s program notes.  We’ll be appearing Saturday night, 29 September, at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall on the NVCC Alexandria Campus, 3001 N. Beauregard Street, Alexandria (very close to the intersection of Route 395 and Seminary Road).  Curtain time is 8 P.M. for a program named Autumn Fantasies, which will feature a young balalaika virtuoso, Dmitry Shvetsov, visiting us from eastern Siberia.  Most of the music is from Russia, including a full-length balalaika concerto by Shulman, but there will also two be Latin-American numbers, notably that perennial hit, Besame Mucho.  For the orchestra, this has been a “fun” program to prepare, and I think you’ll find the music both interesting and enjoyable – a nice mix of the exotic and the familiar.

Purchased before the event, tickets are $20 for adults and $15 apiece for students, seniors, and groups of more than five.  If you’d like to attend, send a note or give me a call, and I’ll have tix waiting for you at “will call.”  Or see our website: www.ABSOrchestra.org

*** Unanswered question:

Is it the made to order breakfast, or the cute barista at the cappuccino machine, or the fact that the kids are all in the sound-proofed “CurioCity,” or the library with a pool table, or the big, dark theater with huge, soft chairs showing opera, or the desert buffet that makes the Turkish Airways Lounge at Istanbul the best airport lounge I’ve seen yet?

**  Rejoin?

Ned, I joined IABC last year and was hoping it would get me out and about in terms of attending meetings/conferences to meet more professionals.  As I lost my job in May, I’m on the fence about rejoining.  Do you think it’s worth my while? I left a non-profit health educational organization where I was Director of Communications. I’m now hoping to do some freelance business writing.

I welcome any suggestions.  A.B.

(My personal experience is a huge yes.  When you are out of work, that’s when you really need to join, and more importantly get involved.  The more involved, the richer the networking connections.  That’s how opportunity presents itself.)
