*** Have yiou ever had this situation?
Ned:
Thought you might enjoy this true story for JOTW:
My employer needs a short-term temp/intern to fill in during an upcoming staff maternity leave this summer. Not worth a national search so we contacted two local university J-schools, asking faculty for names of students they could recommend. We settled on four students who sounded promising and WE contacted THEM:
* One never replied to our phone calls and emails.
* One replied with a poorly written letter that, among other things, misspelled the very easy name of my boss.
* One made an interview appointment, then texted a note a couple hours before the meeting to say she was having a busy week and would rather meet with us later.
* The last student came in, arriving 5 minutes early, was cordial, smiling and professional, and handed around a stringbook of impressive work.
Guess who got the job? The competition may not be as severe as you think.

*** I flew down to Tampa for a quick visit to St. Petersburg for a conference on Maritime Security. Worldly traveler that I am, I was looking forward to breezing through the TSA Pre-Check line. But it had closed at 6:00 p.m., and here it was, about ten after 6 (the last time I flew out of DCA I was ten minutes to early for the TSA Pre-Check line, which opens at 6 a.m.). I dress and pack with the idea that I don’t have to pull certain things out, or off. Oh well, get it on the way back. I sat next to a young lady who proceeded to wipe down her arm rest and seat back tray table with disinfectant. Later, I took out my bag of goodies and opened up a piece of string cheese. “Tell me that’s been refrigerated?” I told her I had taken it out of the fridge just before I came to the airport. Then, the flight attendant served me two glasses of sparkling water. The young lady sitting next to me said, “I didn’t order this.” But she took a sip anyway.” She put it back on the middle seat tray table and left it there. After the flight attendants had been around several more times to pick up trash I asked her, “Are you finished with that?” “You’re not going to drink it, are you??” she asked with astonishment. I took a sip out of it.” No, I said. “The flight attendant has been around a couple of times to pick up trash and she thinks your not finished with it, so you need to let her know she can take it because we’re about to land.” Once on the ground she took out her handi-wipes and wiped her hands off one last time of the many germs that surrounded her, and of me. Oh, and on the way back, I checked to make sure TPA had TSA Pre-check. Yes! Great. Wait, when I got there, only Deltta had Pre-check. Off with the shoes.
