JOTW 21-2013
May 27, 2013
This is JOTW newsletter number 967
“Remembrance and reflection how allied. What thin partitions divides sense from thought.”
– Alexander Pope
*** Today is Memorial Day in the United States. My mother remembers going to the cemetery in Saxonville, Massachusetts as a little girl for Decoration Day, and the Civil War veterans would pay their respects to the widows. This is a day I choose to remember my friends and shipmates who are no longer with us, and to remember something about each of them and our time together. I also think of the Navy Hymn played at the end of so many funerals:
Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!
