The Communications Manager will assist the Communications team for Exelis Mission Systems in managing a broad range of communications activities for the division, to include marketing communications, employee communications, philanthropy, executive communications, social media, web integration, and program communication as well as domestic and potentially international trade shows. As a member of the Mission Systems Communications team, s/he is responsible for supporting and executing all communications activities that will support the company’s business objectives in accordance with the Exelis Vision and Values.
Applicants should be aware that in December 2013, Exelis announced its plan to spin-off Exelis Mission Systems into an independent public company by summer 2014. Following completion of the spin-off,
Exelis Mission Systems will be renamed and rebranded as a new, independent company that provides industry-leading facilities management, logistics and network communications services. As a pure-play services provider, the new company will capitalize on more than 50 years of experience delivering service solutions to a wide range of customers. With nearly 7,000 employees currently operating in more than 100 locations in 18 countries, the Mission Systems business is well-positioned to deliver a broad range of capabilities as an independent entity. From facilities management and full spectrum logistics support to operating and maintaining networks and communication infrastructure, the new company will leverage its reputation and decades-long track record as a leading provider of services to the U.S. government to offer a unique value proposition based on efficiency, operational excellence and cost-effectiveness.
MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:
• Assist in the development and execution of a proactive social media strategy to enhance relationships with all applicable audiences, ensuring accurate coverage.
• Manage social media presence to maximize synergies and enhance effectiveness of the communications function.
• Broadly assist in the development and execution of long-range and annual communications strategies and plans that are aligned with the company’s business objectives, address both external and internal audiences, and are executed within the function’s budget.
• Position the Exelis brand consistently and innovatively to all internal and external stakeholders in accordance with the corporate branding guidelines.
• Draft and disseminate news releases, media alerts and other media materials as directed by the Mission Systems Communications team and in collaboration with corporate headquarters and other Exelis business divisions.
• Provide content and design input as part of the management effort for the company’s external website, social media channels and employee intranet.
• Partner with Exelis human resources and other functional departments to develop and implement communications plans for major company change management initiatives such as, open enrollment, IT implementations, diversity & inclusion efforts, ethics & values, etc.
• This manager will also play a key role in event planning/management at the direction of the VP, Communications, including Town Halls, All Hands meetings, corporate visits and Board of Director/Program/CEO meetings.
• Provide Communications expertise as a subject matter expert at appropriate employee training or meeting venues.
• Other duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certifications: One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.
B.A. or higher in Communications, English, Journalism, Marketing or a related field.
Experience:
At least 5-8 years of work experience in communications. Knowledge of the defense and aerospace industry. Extensive knowledge of social media and website content development.
Skills:
