JOTW 49-2016

December 5,, 2016

www.nedsjotw.com

This is JOTW newsletter number 1,681

“There is no sadder sight than a young pessimist.”

– Mark Twain

This edition of JOTW comes to you from Springfield, Virginia.

***  Welcome to the JOTW network.

This is the award-winning free Job of the Week e-mail networking newsletter for professional communicators, dedicated to the positive unanticipated consequences of networking, or as we call it, “nedworking.”  JOTW is a cooperative service.  That means JOTW relies on the contributions of its members, like you.  We share job opportunities, news and information about the job market, as well as swapping stories about life’s peculiarities.  We connect you with others who are like you, and together we help each other.  What a concept.  Did I mention it’s free?

***  To submit a job for sharing on JOTW, please provide the job title, organization or company, and location and send it to Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.   Provide a link or contact info so people can check out your listing or follow up if interested.

JOTW is sent out on Mondays by email with a list the jobs posted in the full newsletter, which is posted online at www.nedsjotw.com.  This is designed to keep the size of the emails to a more manageable length.

***  The position descriptions and or follow up information on links to the jobs can be found at www.nedsjotw.com.

***  Posting a job is free.    Recruiters can submit up to three jobs for free.  Each job listing may be posted once in the newsletter for free

I request that you do not send pdf files that I have to copy and reformat.  I prefer you provide your very brief job description in an email rather than an enclosure.  Please limit the size of your position descriptions (generally to 500 words or less).  “Can’t Wait” blast email priority listings are $300, and “Top Job” placement is $100.  Just send to me at lundquist989@cs.com.

***  This is a cooperative service.  It relies on your participation and contribution.  As you receive the benefit of this free newsletter, you should also send in jobs you learn about.  This is especially the case when there are job listings in the companies that you work for.

***  To sign up for JOTW or Ned’s other newsletters, visit this site:

http://bit.ly/JOTWSubscribe.

Be advised that I am transitioning away from Topica and relocating the list with Google Groups.

***  To sign up for JOTW’s new Google Groups list, send an email to Ned at lundquist989@cs.com and request to join the new listerv.

***  To change your email address for Topica delivery of JOTW, use the unsubscribe button at the bottom of your newsletter, and then subscribe with your new address at:  http://bit.ly/JOTWSubscribe.

***  This week’s Can’t Wait postings:

None this week.

Can’t Wait jobs:  These jobs are forwarded to the entire list as soon as they are received, and do not wait for the Monday newsletter, and are posted prominently on the JOTW website.  Then they are posted first in the weekly JOTW newsletter.  Can’t Wait postings cost $300.  Contact Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.

***  This week’s Top Job:

None this week.

***  Top Jobs:  Stand above the rest.  Your job can be right here, at the top of the weekly JOTW newsletter.  Top job placement costs $100 per job per week.  To be on top, contact Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.

***  If you find out about a job opportunity in communications, send it to me (lundquist989@cs.com),  and I’ll share it with the JOTW network.

***  The JOTW network is built upon cooperative principles.  Share, and reap the benefits.  And it feels good to help others.  I call it selfish altruism.  But this also means you need to contribute.

***  Listing a position is free.  Top jobs placement is $100, and a “Can’t Wait” posting is $300.

***  In this issue:

PROTECTING WHITE MOUNTAIN ALPINE VEGETATION

The joint U.S. Forest Service (USFS)/Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Alpine Stewardship Volunteer program started in 2000, sparked by the dedicated interest of a few individuals. Today the program has developed new partnerships with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) and expanded its efforts to include both Franconia Ridge and the Mt. Washington summit.

The AMC, USFS, and ATC hope to increase the public’s awareness of its impact on the alpine environment and educate visitors about preservation of alpine vegetation. The volunteer Alpine Stewards address topics such as the importance of staying on the trail, prevention of “summit sprawl,” Leave No Trace ethics, alpine safety and low-impact trail tending. While on the trail, Stewards respond to questions or concerns of hikers and engage visitors in a friendly, educational manner.

ALPINE STEWARD QUALITIES

  • Individuals interested in applying should:

  • Have a friendly, outgoing, professional manner, in addition to experience working with the public in a recreational setting.

  • Have extensive hiking experience and an understanding of AMC and the White Mountain National Forest.

  • Are committed to the protection of the alpine zone and the promotion of Leave No Trace ethics.

  • Have comfort in approaching individuals to provide educational conservation and safety information.

  • Hold a current Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification;or are willing to be certified.

  • Can provide coverage at least two weekends per year.

  • Can attend the annual training held one weekend in the spring.

  • Are AMC members.

In addition, Alpine Stewards also:

  • Demonstrate appropriate alpine zone behavior and Leave No Trace ethics and approach hikers to provide education on these matters as well as ecology, Forest Service backcountry camping regulations, and low-impact trail tending.

  • Provide information to visitors about safety concerns, particularly regarding weather.

  • Participate in AMC’s Mountain Watch program by monitoring plant phenology stages and collecting data for AMC research.

SUPPORT

  • Partners provide the following support for alpine stewards:

  • Room and board on the weekends they serve at Greenleaf hut or Joe Dodge Lodge.

  • Gear and uniform to use while working.

  • Recognition for their efforts through Stewardship Society awards, based on the number of hours contributed annually.

  • Discounts on AMC retail merchandise while volunteering.

This is JOTW newsletter number 1,680

“With the possible exception of the equator, everything begins somewhere.”

– C.S. Lewis

This edition of JOTW comes to you from Singapore.

***  Welcome to the JOTW network.

http://bit.ly/JOTWSubscribe

This is JOTW newsletter number 1,680

“One could do worse than be a swinger of birches.”

– Robert Frost

This edition of JOTW comes to you from Springfield, Virginia.

***  Welcome to the JOTW network.

http://bit.ly/JOTWSubscribe

Pkain text is better than a highly formatted document.

This is a cooperative network. That means everyone’s participation is required to provide job opportunities to share.

I never give out, rent, or sell my list, and neither does Topica.

***  Welcome to the JOTW network.

http://bit.ly/JOTWSubscribe

***  This week’s JOTW alternative job selection:

***  From Sue Bumpous:

51.)  Dean, Faculty of Adventure, Culinary Arts and Tourism, Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops, BC

For 45 years Thompson Rivers University has taken pride in providing an excellent education to students with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives who are at various stages of their learning journey. TRU is a comprehensive, learner-centred, environmentally responsible institution that serves its regional, national, and international learners and their communities through high quality and flexible education, training, research and scholarship. From traditional academics to trades, from certificates to graduate degrees, TRU offers over 140 on-campus programs and 60 Open Learning programs to choose from. Nearly 26,000 students study on campuses in Kamloops and Williams Lake, or in distance or online courses and programs through Open Learning. Research, creation and innovation thrive in TRU’s open, flexible learning environment.

The Faculty of Adventure, Culinary Arts and Tourism is a unique unit that is composed of three departments: Adventure Studies, Culinary Arts and Tourism Management. With nearly 200 full-time and sessional faculty, the Faculty has a strong commitment to student learning and offers both credit and non-academic credit courses, as well as programs that range from certificates and diplomas through to undergraduate degrees. The development of Masters degrees in both Adventure study and Experience Studies is currently underway. With the goal of providing outstanding, relevant education the Faculty is committed to developing strong future leaders who have the breadth and depth of knowledge to create innovation and success within the public and private sectors. In 2015 the Faculty became home to a Canada Research Chair in Rural Livelihoods and Sustainable Communities who is acting as an engine of research, working to connect the university to the communities it serves in purposeful and meaningful ways.

As the Faculty’s chief academic and administrative officer, the Dean is responsible to the Provost and Vice-President Academic for providing dynamic and visionary leadership in the articulation and implementation of the Faculty’s evolving strategic plan for professional and career development, education, research and outreach in alignment with Thompson Rivers University’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities. As an outstanding scholar or leader in a related field, the Dean will continue to raise the Faculty’s profile locally, nationally and internationally, while expanding on key priorities.

The successful candidate for this key leadership position will be strategic, entrepreneurial and have demonstrated experience as an inspirational leader, communicator and mentor. A terminal degree in a related discipline is preferred, while a strong appreciation and understanding of the industry contexts of adventure, culinary arts and tourism are essential.

Thompson Rivers University is strongly committed to fostering diversity within our community. We welcome those who would contribute to the further diversification of our staff, our faculty and its scholarship including, but not limited to, women, visible minorities, Aboriginal people, persons with disabilities and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity. Please note that all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, applications from Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to serve in a leadership role at one of Canada’s most innovative universities. To apply or learn more, please contact either Danielle Conn or Cameron Geldart at 604.926.0005 or forward your application package (current CV, a letter of introduction and a list of three references) in confidence to danielle@thegeldartgroup.com.
