JOTW 02-2013
January 14, 2013
This is JOTW newsletter number 950
“Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.”
– Mark Twain
*** Welcome to the JOTW network.
*** This issue of JOTW comes to you from the JOTW Global Operations Center in Springfield, Virginia.
*** We’re experiencing technical difficulties
You probably have noticed that your JOTW newsletter has not landed on your step since the Monday morning of Oct. 22.I learned that the problem was with the Topica listserv I have used since 2002. While that service served my modest needs, the platform was obsolete. Since we were unable to fix the old system I am going to try a new Topica platform.
I have transferred over the 11,600-plus members of the network to the new JOTW list. If you receive this email then you have been “migrated.” If this doesn’t work, it’s back to the drawing board.
I have continued to produce and publish your JOTW every week in the hope that the Topica problem would get fixed. Since Oct. 22, they are all availavble at www.nedsjotw.com. Check them out. Please.
If this works, and all else goes well, you should see your Monday newsletter again this coming Monday morning.
I know many of you have thought that I unsubscribed you. But most of you know that I would not abandon this network, at least not without saying goodbye. And I am not saying goodbye. If you want to give me an e-hug, my email remains lundquist989@cs.com.
Thank you for your patience.
Ned Lundquist, ABC
Publisher and editor
The Job of the Week
*** To post a job, just send the position, organization and location with a link or contact info for follow-up or replying to Ned at lundquist989@cs,ciom. Posting a job is free. Jobs will be sent out in the free weekly newsletter, which usually comes out on Mondays for free. The newsletter, with all of these great employment opportunities, is then posted for free at www.nedsjotw.com, which is a free website. Recruiters can submit up to three jobs for free. Each job listing may be posted once in the newsletter for free. Did I mention that all this is free?
You can send job or other announcements to the entire list of 11,600-plus communication professionals right away using the exclusive JOTW “Can’t Wait” posting for a very reasonable cost of just $300. “Can’t Wait” announcements are also posted to the website (www.nedsjotw.com) and will be posted in the next JOTW newsletter, too. So if you can’t wait until the next newsletter, or have more than three jobs to share, or you want to repost a position, or just want Ned to make a few dollars for all of his effort, then the “Can’t Wait” option is right for you. Also, it gets immediate, high-impact results. To send a “Can’t Wait” announcement, contact Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.
*** Top Jobs: Stand above the rest. Your job can be right here, at the top of the weekly JOTW newsletter. Top job placement costs $100 per job per week. To be on top, contact Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.
*** If you find out about a job opportunity in communications, send it to me (lundquist989@cs.com), and I’ll share it with the JOTW network. Your friends can sign up by sending a blank e-mail to
You are among 11,607 subscribers in this community of communicators. While this level has been pretty flat over the past year or so, this does represent an all-time high for the JOTW network.
*** The JOTW network is built upon cooperative principles. Share, and reap the benefits. And it feels good to help others. I call it selfish altruism. But this also means you need to contribute.
*** I can’t change your e-mail address for you. But you can. Send a blank e-mail from your old account to JOTW-unsubscribe@topica.com. Then send a blank e-mail from your new account to JOTW-subscribe@topica.com.
*** The general JOTW policy is to submit three listings per corporate recruiter or executive search firm submission. If you have more than three listings, I suggest sending out a Can’t Wait posting.

*** Topica update:
Your January 7 JOTW arrived in what appears to the be new Topica format. Wanted to let you know it showed up, although at the end of the week instead of the beginning – part of your test process?
Good luck with the transition and thanks for keeping on keeping on as we used to say.
Sue Bumpous
(Yes…that was the test email, in HTML and text. We broke the 11-600 names into groups and tested out the system. Seems to work. Now I have to figure out how to use it. I should have new capabilities I didn’t have before. But ease of use for myself and the readers, and low cost are requirements for me. Low ciostr as in hopefully no cost.)
*** Correcpt:
Ned:
Wow! You’ve had to sift through a lot of barriers and obstacles to get your mission accomplished–something like my ongoing job search. I really appreciate the updates and effort as it makes me feel more human.
Thank you so much for embarking on this yeoman’s task.
Sincerely,
AK
P.S. Maybe it was through the fault of my own computer, but clicking on www.nedsjoptw.com didn’t work for me. I’ll just continue to reach you the old fashioned way. I think there’s an extra “p” in the address.
(You are right. My bapd.)
*** Forward!
Excellent news. Missed JOTW. It’s my first response to communication jobseekers who call me looking for leads – I forward it to them so they can see what’s out there. Then they have to quit whining that there are no jobs 😉
Thanks for the enormous effort to accomplish the migration. Onward and upward!
With cheer from Texas,
Susan
Susan H. Burnell, APR
(There should be a new “forward this email” feature to make it easier to send to friends and fellow communicators.)
*** Novel…graphics:
Ed, I wanted to give you feedback on the JOTW email, which I enjoy perusing and hoping that my next communications job will be found somewhere on its pages.
I received the new email. All images came through nicely, and the new layout looks great. Well done!
Kind regards—
RB
*** Sweet spot:
Keep up the good work, Ned! {virtual hug}
I’ve held two great jobs found on JOTW. I cross over between communications and defense so your lists hit a sweet spot for me.
With Gratitude,
AG
*** What to wear:
I had noticed the JOTW was missing because I didn’t know what hat to wear, mug to drink tea from or other critical needs of the week.

*** Hey, I haven’t seen the JOTW e-mail in awhile:
Ned,
Thanks for the update and explanation on JOTW. Since I’m not actively looking for a job, I had only been skimming the the newsletter on Monday mornings. Through the hustle and bustle, I hadn’t really missed it…until last week. I thought to myself, “Hey, I haven’t seen the JOTW e-mail in awhile.” I DID figure I had been unsubscribed.
Glad to hear it will be back soon.
RP
*** Words:
So glad to hear that you’re back! Words can’t express what an amazing resource you are providing for communications professionals out here!
SW
*** Relying on JOTW:
Sending an e-hug!
Thanks for all that you do with the JOTW and more. I am relying on your list very heavily these days!

*** Solid:
Hi Ned,
Thank you for coming back! Quite timely for me- I’m really in need of a J-O-B. I now live in Arizona, but subscribed when I lived in DC area many moons ago. I’m freelancing for the Arizona Republic, but would like to get back to some solid WORK. (Not that my work isn’t solid, but freelance pay, well, isn’t.)
I love your quote from Carl Sagan.
Happy 2013!
S G
*** Coach makes the right call:
Thanks, Ned, for the email about the technical problems with JOTW. I was wondering what had happened to it.
Anyway, this gives me an excuse to also thank you for the incredible service you have performed with this newsletter. I’m one of the thousands who have benefitted from it. A career coach pointed me to it many years ago, and I’ve been forever grateful.
Best wishes, and thank you again,
S H

76.) Copy Director – Associate Creative Director, Sage Communications, McLean, VA
Graphics stop the reader – but it’s copy that wins their heart. Become our Cyrano by leading the written word for everything we say: on paper, on a screen, and on our clients’ lips. Think with our clients, speak for them, and raise their voices above the crowd (and our own high expectations). Start by immersing yourself in our cross-functional teams and deep strategic process, to ferret out the technical and market truths of what we must say. Then take these insights and connect them to emotional realities that resonate with wildly different audiences on any given day.
Our fast-moving shop has the diversity of clients, channels and challenges you need to take your craft to the next level – to build on the essentials you learned in your first decade in the trade, and own national campaigns with million-dollar-tier visibility. We work in complex fields with unique rules, cultures and dialects – where winning means being able to switch voices, concepts and mindsets without missing a step. And our team moves fast, smart and together – where everybody savors the success, but nobody settles for same-old-same-old.
Ready to ramp up your game? We’re game to hear what you offer. But first …
Can you do this?
· Short-form copy: Show your cut-to-the-chase insight for audiences with thirty-second attention spans, from print and online to live marketing initiatives
· Long-form copy: Prove your gravitas with factually accurate, technically literate, and persuasive copy for business and technical collateral, websites, presentations / speeches, and video
· Strategy: Hit the ground running on any account we entrust to you, by understanding the client’s business at its core and inhabiting every facet of their world, from purpose and product to customers and competition; be proficient at using marketing and brainstorming sessions to extract additional insights
· Leadership: Mentor by example; develop our junior talent with your insights and kind spirit; gain confidence of your peers with a get-it-done attitude they can rely on; take positive criticism in style, and constantly evolve yourself and your craft; admit what you don’t know, always seek to know more, and freely share what you do
· Teamwork: Leave your ego at the door; show relentless attention to detail; communicate often and proactively, seize the moment whenever an issue arises, keep every client and team impact in mind, and see issues from their perspectives; be patient with those beyond creative, and diplomatically bring them to your viewpoint
· Influence: Find and express ideas that have the power to move markets; deliver written word that wows your most demanding audience – your creative peers; hold your own in front of any client audience when presenting and defending those ideas and words
· Work ethic: Master multiple accounts, projects, deliverables and paces with the calm confidence of a professional juggler; accept change as the only constant; live the deadline, run the project marathon, keep your own schedule and never let them see you sweat
Can you prove this?
· Bachelor’s degree in Marketing / Advertising, Communications / Journalism, or related field from a nationally accredited four-year college / university
· Seven to twelve years of progressive work experience / accomplishments in a marketing communications or advertising agency is a must; experience in an advocacy or media organization is a plus
· A polished, professional portfolio we’ll remember long after we talk, with samples that include at least half a dozen different media forms
· Experience with publicly-held institutions (government, non-profits and big business) is essential; national brand account experience would be a huge plus
· Mastery of Mac-based work environments, MS Office for Mac, proofing marks, and basic copywriting tools
