Issue # 873

This edition of DEFCON 1 comes to you from Springfield, Virginia.

*** Welcome to the latest edition of the number one Defense Career Opportunities Newsletter, “DEFCON-1,” a networking newsletter featuring job opportunities and career advice for those who are part of the global defense, aerospace, maritime, marine technology and security industry.

DEFCON 1 brings you job opportunities every week and counts on members like you to submit job listings to share and post in this newsletter.

***  Sign up for regular free delivery of this newsletter through Google Groups by sending an email to Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.

Note:  DEFCON 1 will cease publication at the end of this year. There is a possibility that it may resume under different management.

***  When you learn about a job opportunity in the defense sector, such as a position that comes open with your company, you send me the title, organization, location, and a brief description; link; or contact information, and I’ll share. This is a cooperative network. That means everyone’s participation is required to provide job opportunities to share.

JOTW 49-2024

December 9, 2024

The Free Job of the Week Newsletter

www.nedsjotw.com

This is JOTW newsletter number 2,064

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”

– Dale Carnegie

This edition of JOTW comes to you from Danville, Virginia.

***  Welcome to the JOTW network!

You are one of more than 5,700+ members in the JOTW subscriber network.

This is the award-winning free Job of the Week e-mail networking newsletter for professional communicators, dedicated to the positive unanticipated consequences of networking, or as we call it, “nedworking.”  JOTW is a cooperative service.  That means JOTW relies on the contributions of its members, like you.  We share job opportunities, news and information about the job market, as well as swapping stories about life’s peculiarities.  We connect you with others who are like you, and together we help each other.  What a concept.  Did I mention it’s free?

***  To submit a job for sharing on JOTW, please provide the job title, organization or company, and location and send it to Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.   Provide a link or contact info so people can check out your listing or follow up if interested.

***  Posting a job is free.    Recruiters can submit up to three jobs for free.  Each job listing may be posted once in the newsletter for free

I request that you do not send pdf files that I have to copy and reformat.  I prefer you provide your very brief job description in an email rather than an enclosure.  Please limit the size of your position descriptions (generally to 500 words or less).  “Can’t Wait” blast email priority listings are $300, and “Top Job” placement is $100.  Just send to me at lundquist989@cs.com.

***  This is a cooperative service.  It relies on your participation and contribution.  As you receive the benefit of this free newsletter, you should also send in jobs you learn about.  This is especially the case when there are job listings in the companies that you work for.

***  To sign up for JOTW’s new Google Groups list, send an email to Ned at lundquist989@cs.com and request to join the JOTW listserv.  If you received this as an email from neds-job-of-the-week@googlegroups.com, then you are on this list.

***  A special message to my JOTW subscribers

Thank you for the many notes you have sent me about JOTW coming to an end.  And additional thanks to those who have volunteered to keep it going.  I’ll post some of the comments in this and upcoming issues of JOTW.  As for determining who to pass it along to, I hadn’t given it much thought, and I don’t have a mechanism to determine the most-worthy successor.  I’m working on that now.

***  Here are some comments about the Job of the Week Newsletter and its impending shutdown:

***  From LB:

Hi Ned,

I’m mainly a digital comms and event person but I’ve found (and posted) a few jobs via your newsletter over the years.

That said, I would also like to thank you for your work and service to job-seekers and job posters over the years.

Best wishes,

LB

***  From James J. Henderson III:

Even though I’ve never been hired as a result of any of your postings, the newsletter is a genuine pleasure to read. I’ve been a subscriber for at least 15 years. I especially enjoy your April fools edition.

I hope that you enjoy your time. Thank you for your service.

James J. Henderson III

***  This week’s Can’t Wait postings:

None this week

***  Can’t Wait jobs:  These jobs are forwarded to the entire list as soon as they are received, and do not wait for the Monday newsletter, and are posted prominently on the JOTW website.  Then they are posted first in the weekly JOTW newsletter.  Can’t Wait postings cost $300.  Contact Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.

***  This week’s Top Job:

None this week.

Top Jobs:  Stand above the rest.  Your job can be right here, at the top of the weekly JOTW newsletter.  Top job placement costs $100 per job per week.  To be on top, contact Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.

***  If you find out about a job opportunity in communications, send it to me (lundquist989@cs.com),   and I’ll share it with the JOTW network.

There is no waiting list.  Or, if there is, the queue is pretty short.  And it’s free!  Submit yours today!

***  Source of Sources

JOTW 48-2024

Sunset for JOTW

It’s coming!

————————————————————————

JOTW 48-2024

December 2, 2024

The Free Job of the Week Newsletter

www.nedsjotw.com

This is JOTW newsletter number 2,063

“The end of a melody is not its goal: but nonetheless, had the melody not reached its end it would not have reached its goal either. A parable.”

– Friedrich Nietzsche

This edition of JOTW comes to you from Springfield, Virginia.

***  From Allison Jackson:

Hi Ned,

I can’t believe that you’ve been putting out this newsletter since 2001!!! I’ve been a subscriber for probably a good 15+ years. Kudos to you for what you’ve created.

I’d hate to see the newsletter go. I know many colleagues who also rely on it for job opps (especially in this current job market).

You’ve really done an incredible job with JOTW and I thank you for it — as well as your service to our country.

Best,

Allison

***  From Karen Swim, APR:

Hi Ned,

We don’t talk nearly enough but I so appreciate all that you have done over the years for the profession. I just wanted to personally thank you. I have shared your newsletter with so many looking for jobs as a trusted resource. This is the end of an era but I commend you reclaiming your time. I think this is a theme for so many as we reassess and reallocate how we are spending our time. Life requires so much these days we have to self-preserve.

I hope someone takes up the mantel.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Karen

***  From Derin Denham:

Dear Ned,

Thank you for your dedication and commitment to this group and for publishing the newsletter. I have often shared opportunities with my professional network – and it has also been a source of motivation for students and aspiring communicators.

Wishing you the very best,

Derin

***  From Geri Rosman:

Hi Ned. I just read the news. Your email has been eagerly awaited and much appreciated over all these years. I’m not sure I’ve been a subscriber since the very beginning but I think certainly from fairly early on. Wishing you great fulfillment and enjoyment in your recaptured time. Lord knows your JOTW effort all these years, asking for nothing in return, has been above and beyond just an email in our inboxes. Wishing you many years of health and happiness ahead. Thanks so much for all you’ve done for so many of us over the years. Best/GeriRosman

Geri Rosman

***  From Anne Bentley:

Ned,

I’m sure you’ll hear from many of your followers about this transition. First, thank you for devoting so much time and energy to your fellow comms comrades. I’ve been a reader since the start. I can’t thank you enough for both the forum to share our open positions and the opportunity to see what jobs are open. It has been a true service. 23 years is a long time to devote to any endeavor. Kudos.

I would happily step forward to see everything you’ve created continue into the future.

Thank you for everything, and be in touch if you’d like to connect about going forward.

Anne Bentley

***  From Kat Snodgrass:

Thank you, Ned, for all you do and all you have done. I can’t recall how long I’ve been a member but easily 15+ years and I’ve shared postings widely in that time. Like any employees I work with, I hate to see them move on but excited by their future prospects. I wish the same for you.

Best wishes for you and your new endeavors!

Kat

A special message to my DEFCON 1 subscribers

I have been faithfully publishing this newsletter for two decades.  I think there was a time where I thought I could grow the number of job listings and the subscribers in the network to a point where I could attract sponsors or paid listings.  With effort, I’m sure that I could have monetized this newsletter, but I never spent the time or resources to grow it as a business.

My plan is to cease publishing the newsletter at the end of 2024.  If anyone would like to assume the list of subscribers and the website so you can continue to send out the newsletter yourself and post it online as you see fit, please contact me at lundquist989@cs.com and we can work out the details.

JOTW 47-2024

Sunset for JOTW

It’s coming!

————————————————————————

JOTW 47-2024

November 25 2024

The Free Job of the Week Newsletter

www.nedsjotw.com

This is JOTW newsletter number 2,062

“It isn’t necessary to imagine the world ending in fire or ice. There are two other possibilities: one is paperwork, and the other is nostalgia.”

– Frank Zappa

This edition of JOTW comes to you from Springfield, Virginia.

I have been faithfully publishing this newsletter since the beginning of 2001.  I started the network to connect people, including myself.  It helped me find employment when I was looking for work–TWICE, and it has helped many of you find jobs.  In fact, while I do get some feedback, I am aware of cases of subscribers who made a successful connection that led to a real job as a result of JOTW, even if the individuals involved never told me afterwards.  Hey, it happens.

JOTW has always been an avocation for me.  There was a time when I had some paid sponsors, and I admit the money was welcomed, but I never looked at this is as my job.  At one point I had more than 11,000 subscribers.  But there was a problem with the Topica service I was using.  It stopped functioning properly and even as I continued to post the newsletter, I couldn’t tell if all of my subscribers were receiving it. Ultimately, I was able to rebuild the subscriber base using Google Groups, which has worked well for me, but I have never topped 6,000 readers in the post-Topica era.  If I worked hard at outreach, I could grow awareness and increase both subscribers and job listings…and sponsors.  It’s a function of time, mostly, and I don’t really want to make a new investment of time.

I have been extremely faithful in posting JOTW every Monday.  The latest issue represents JOTW newsletter number 2,061.  I took a few weeks off for a vacation once or twice, but most of the time, even when I was on travel, I got the newsletter out–whether it had 30 job opportunities or 130, from wherever I was in the world.

In order to give myself the luxury of that time I spend each week working on JOTW, I plan to cease publishing the newsletter at the end of 2024.

If anyone would like to assume the list of subscribers and the website so you can continue to send out the newsletter yourself and post it online as you see fit, please contact me at lundquist989@cs.com and we can work out the details.

Thank you for being a part of this network.

The VP provides comprehensive account leadership, develops and maintains client relationships and leads internal teams to create and execute value and results for clients.  The VP also serves as a senior advisor to high-profile clients, and a principal communications and public relations strategist to client company executives.  The VP is responsible for the overall advancement of the Public Relations practice, cultivating internal talent, and growing new business. ***  When you learn about a job opportunity in the defense sector, such as a position that comes open with your company, you send me the title, organization, location, and a brief description; link; or contact information, and I’ll share. This is a cooperative network. That means everyone’s participation is required to provide job opportunities to share.

***  Sunset for DEFCON 1:

JOTW 46-2024

November 18, 2024

The Free Job of the Week Newsletter

www.nedsjotw.com

This is JOTW newsletter number 2,061

“The best way out is always through.”

– Robert Frost

This edition of JOTW comes to you from Springfield, Virginia.

Sorry this newsletter is late today.  I went to Boston to get some cannoli and I just got home.

Issue # 869

This edition of DEFCON 1 comes to you from Springfield, Virginia.

*** Welcome to the latest edition of the number one Defense Career Opportunities Newsletter, “DEFCON-1,” a networking newsletter featuring job opportunities and career advice for those who are part of the global defense, aerospace, maritime, marine technology and security industry.

***  Sign up for regular free delivery of this newsletter through Google Groups by sending an email to Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.
