JOTW 01-2007
1 January 2007www.nedsjotw.com
“I used to play one job and have 125 pair of shoes on the floor. What was I doing? I couldn't wear but one pair.”
– James Brown
This is your weekly free Job of the Week e-mail networking newsletter for professional communicators. JOTW is a cooperative that relies upon the submissions of members like you.
“He has half the deed done who has made a beginning,” said the Roman philosopher Horace. Today marks the opening of the long-anticipated (for me at least) JOTW website at http://www.nedsjotw.com. A beginning to be sure, but perhaps just another step in a longer journey. Joe Sabah, a motivational speaker, said “You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”
We have some new features to share with you starting today, including the Communicator’s Horoscope. You will of course want to know what is in the stars for you.
I am all about measurable objectives, and I feel you can often measure things by feet. I have been intrigued by women who comment on each others shoes. “Oh, those a re cute.” I look and see just a pair of shoes. I conducted an informal survey and have discovered that most women have at least 30 pairs and most women have purchased shoes within the previous 14 days. I’m not talking Imelda Marcos, I referring to everyday professional women. So I am setting out to get my hands around this phenomenon. Starting today I bring you “Angela’s Shoes.”
Today we also begin sponsorship for the JOTW newsletter and website. “Asking is the beginning of receiving. Make sure you don't go to the ocean with a teaspoon. At least take a bucket so the kids won't laugh at you,” says motivational speaker Jim Rohn.
“Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible,” adds motivational speaker St. Francis of Assisi. To sponsor each newsletter during a month, and to have your banner ad flying at the top of the JOTW mast costs just $1,000 today. Soon it will be more.
We currently have 10,196 members in the JOTW network. I deleted ALL of the “bounces” from the Topica list by mistake. Sorry.
And it’s easy (for you, not me) to change your JOTW subscription. Unsubscribe from your old address by sending a blank e-mail to JOTW-unsubscribe@topica.com. Then send a blank e-mail from your new address to JOTW-subscribe@topica.com.).
It's all about “Nedworking.” Learn about the JOTW network. Check out the frequently asked questions:http://www.hollandcomm.com/index.php?option=displaypage&Itemid=68&op=page
To mark his passing, we honor the wisdom of James Brown this week:
“The hardest thing about being James Brown is I have to live. I don't have no down time.”
– James Brown
I never give out, rent, or sell my list, and neither does Topica.

*** Grouping:
Ned
a suggestion if you don't mind. Perhaps put the jobs grouped together by location? For example jobs listed 1-5 are from Washington, DC, then jobs 6-10 are from Toronto, etc. That would be a huge help for me as I look for jobs in the DC area. Thank you this wonderful service you provide. Happy New Year.
MH
(I put the newsletter together in semi-chronological order, based on when a job comes in. I add them to a Word document I build as the week progresses, and send it out on Monday. I have purposely sought to keep from grouping all the DC jobs together because I don't want it to seem like a DC list. As I achieve functionality with the new website, and learn how to use it, and have the time, I might make it so you can sort jobs by location, or type. But for now I do not know how to do that.)
Oh OK! Thanks again for this wonderful service you provide and for being willing to listen to feedback! Happy New Year!

*** New Passport Rule to take effect on January 23:
More restrictive rules on travel documents for airline travelers entering the U.S. from Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico and Central and South America take effect on Jan. 23. “We urge all travelers without a passport to act now to ensure a seamless journey,” Air Transport Association President James May said.
*** Use it or lose it:
Ned ~ I happen to be married to a habitual use-or-lose loser. This is the second year in a row that he has lost leave he couldn't/wouldn't use. In past years, they restored it because the agreed that they really hadn't left him enough time to take said leave. Can't say I really understand the phenomenon. He just won't take off unless he is absolutely certain he's not going to be needed (which, of course, he never is) or I stamp my little feet and insist. Thought we'd be okay this year because he took off a week so we could take Lea to Arizona for Easter break and then almost two weeks so we could visit her in Germany. But they debited that from his restored leave and not the current year. He got them to agree to restore the amount they'd debited from restored, but he never got around to taking any extra time for the holiday, so he'll lose about a week or more. He promises that, next year, he'll take time to be with Lea when she visits and the Russian children we hope to have come and maybe even to go to Russia for the adoption. He says that saving up for the adoption is the reason he's not been using up his leave, but I maintain that he has enough banked (and BTW, he can use sick time for adoption … of which he has an endless supply since he's NEVER sick) that he could use all of this year's UorL and still have plenty. Of course, this is the man who often does not charge them for overtime, even when they schedule meetings for after his workday ends. ~ C'Lee
*** Cindy Thomas on Lt. Col. Trane McCloud, who was killed when the CH-46 helicopter he was flying in crashed in Iraq:
Ned ~ So very sorry to hear that you lost yet another “battle buddy” to the war on terror. But thank you for always bringing us their stories and making them real and familiar to us. That is the great tragedy of any war: the promising lives cut short. Someone ought to compile a book (books?) of their stories. That's what we should be hearing on the evening news (NPR does do one weekly), not what Harry Reid thinks. ~ C'Lee

*** Blessing:
Ned,
This is the first time something of a religious nature has captured my intellect as well as my heart. In fact, I usually feel cynicism — not redemption — when I get an email of a religious nature. But this blessing from Pat has been, well, a true blessing. Thank you.
And thank you for your weekly newsletter. You do great work!

(I tried not to be denominational…but once a year isn't too much to be aware and thankful of each other.)

*** Taking action:
Hi Ned,
Although I am fortunate to be happily employed, I read your newsletter religiously if for no other reason the inspiring quotes you include. As I take stock of my blessings and the people who help make them possible, I want to be sure to thank you for the service you provide and for this beautiful blessing that you and Captain Tracy shared. What a wonderful reminder of how fortunate we really are combined with a thoughtful call to action to help those who do not share that fortune. I will work hard to do my part in 2007.
Hope that the year ahead brings you more happiness, success and blessings.

*** Duke Smith takes time from all the “goings-on” to count some blessings:
Ned,
With all the goings-on here at home, I just read the very special and
meaningful prayer from Captain Tracy. God bless him and you and your
families as you both cement together communities around the world.
Happy New Year!

*** Read, Write Returning:
Ned,
My husband is retired Air Force, so we get the military discount on harbor fees. The marina is available for civilians, so long as they abide by rules & regs – after 9/11, we couldn't have access to our boats for three weeks, which caused a lot of people to switch harbors. The price is too good to pass up, and there's no crowds – it's great. Haven't had a chance to read your book reviews – My nose is buried in grad school textbooks for at least one more year, so my extracurricular reading is nonexistant.

Hey Ned — greetings from chilly Korea, where we're soon approaching “Year of the Golden Pig” (don't ask) in the next Lunar Year, which officially hits sometime around February 18. Apparently “Golden Pig” years happen only once each 600 years, so enjoy it. Prosperity and good luck and all that jazz, they say, but I say it means go get yourself some good barbecue. Or bacon.
Anyway, I do still get NBA job updates, and even though Dwyane Wade and my hometown Miami Heat will always have the edge on other 2003 draftees, smart money says LeBron will have a ring before it's all said and done. So why not help fill the seats for him? Strategically, of course (IABC would be proud). See below.
Happy New Year to you and your family, and best of luck in all things in 2007. Website looks nice!
